Most of the "foundation stock" Black and Tan's registered with the American Black and Tan Kennel Club in 1945 carried the Grand Mere Kennels prefix. The first Black and Tan Coonhound to complete an AKC Championship title was Ch Grand Mere Lassie on May 10, 1946. Many Grand Mere champions earned their titles during the latter half of that year. Mr. Dunham was a founding member of the National Black and Tan Club formed in 1947 and assisted in authoring the first AKC breed standard, along with fellow pioneer breeders William Cosner and Don Stringer.
